“How much does it cost to detail an airplane?” is one of the first questions owners and flight departments ask, and it rarely has a one-number answer. An aircraft detail is priced by the size of the aircraft, the condition of its paint and cabin, and what work you actually need done. This guide walks through typical aircraft detailing prices in the Chicago area, what drives the cost up or down, and how to get an accurate quote for your airplane.
Why aircraft detailing costs more than car detailing
Aircraft detailing isn’t automotive detailing on a bigger vehicle. Aircraft paint, acrylic windows, de-ice boots, sensors, and cabin materials all need products and techniques made for aviation, and a mistake on an aircraft is far more expensive than a mistake on a car. The surface area is also much larger: even a small single-engine airplane has more painted area than several cars, and a midsize jet’s cabin has more leather, carpet, and trim than most living rooms. Add in the travel to your airport, ramp and hangar access, and the insurance a professional detailer carries, and pricing reflects specialized, hand-finished work.
Typical aircraft detailing prices in Chicago by aircraft size
These are Avioera’s starting rates for on-site detailing at Chicagoland airports. Every final price is confirmed with you before we start.
| Aircraft category | Exterior detailing | Interior detailing |
|---|---|---|
| Piston / single-engine | $600 – $1,100 | $450 – $850 |
| Light jet / turboprop | $1,100 – $1,900 | $800 – $1,500 |
| Midsize jet | $1,800 – $3,500 | $1,400 – $2,800 |
| Heavy jet | $4,000 – $9,000+ | $3,500 – $7,500+ |
Combining an exterior and interior detail in one visit saves money compared with booking them separately, so ask for a bundled quote if you need both.
What affects the price of an aircraft detail
- Aircraft size and type. More surface area and a larger cabin mean more hours. A Cessna 172 and a Gulfstream are very different jobs.
- Paint condition. Paint that has been washed regularly needs a wash and sealant. Oxidized, chalky, or swirled paint needs machine correction first, which adds significant time.
- Contamination. Heavy exhaust staining, belly grease, baked-on bugs from a summer of flying, and winter de-icing residue all take extra degreasing and decontamination.
- Cabin size and materials. Leather seats, wood veneer, galleys, lavatories, and carpet all need different care. A heavily used charter cabin takes longer than a lightly flown owner’s cabin.
- Time since the last detail. Aircraft on a regular schedule are faster and cheaper to keep clean than aircraft that have gone a long time between details. Our guide to how often to detail your aircraft in Chicago covers typical intervals.
- Turnaround time. Tight windows between flights can require more planning. We schedule around your departures.
Add-on services and what they cost
Beyond a standard exterior or interior detail, these add-ons have their own starting prices:
- Engine cowling and inlet detailing: from $225
- Charter fast-turn detailing: from $300
- Polished aluminum and brightwork restoration: from $900
- Pre-sale or pre-appraisal detailing package: from $2,200
- Ceramic coating and paint protection package: from $3,000
If you’re weighing a coating, our owner’s guide to aircraft ceramic coating explains what it does and doesn’t do. For cabins, see what’s included in a private jet interior detail.
One-time detail vs. a recurring maintenance plan
For aircraft that fly often, a recurring plan is usually the most cost-effective way to stay clean. Avioera’s recurring maintenance plan runs $300 – $750 per aircraft per month, with weekly, biweekly, or monthly visits and priority scheduling for flight departments and charter operators. Regular visits keep grime from building up, so each visit is lighter work and the aircraft always looks ready. In Chicago, steady upkeep through the cold months also matters; our guide to protecting aircraft paint through a Chicago winter explains why.
Watch out for quotes that seem too low
A low price can be tempting, but ask what is included. Make sure the detailer is insured, uses aviation-safe products on paint, windows, and cabin surfaces, and knows which areas, such as pitot tubes, static ports, and sensors, must be protected during a wash. Cutting corners with household or automotive chemicals can damage acrylic windows, seals, and interior materials, costing far more than the detail itself. Avioera is fully insured and uses certified, aviation-safe chemicals for exterior cleaning, interior cleaning, and degreasing.
How to get an accurate quote
To get a firm price quickly, have this ready when you call or email:
- Aircraft make and model (and tail number, if you like).
- The airport and whether it’s hangared or on the ramp.
- Which services you want: exterior, interior, or both, plus any add-ons.
- A rough description of the condition, or a few photos.
- When the aircraft is next scheduled to fly.
